HOW DOES IT PLAY?
As you would expect, taking your game play to the field level incorporates much more authenticity with ball movement impacted by hang time, fielding ability including range and arm strength, base running, let alone weather conditions such as the wind factor.
Naturally, now a lot more can happen real-time when taking your Baseball Classics players onto the field of play in any MLB ballpark!
Thus, we developed an efficient next generation game play system that rapidly produces multiple play outcomes typically within 1 roll of the dice per at-bat.
1 Simple Dice Roll Handles This Multiple Play Outcome Example:
The home team is down by 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs. However, they have runners on 1st and 2nd base, a right-handed hitter at the plate, and right-fielder shaded a bit towards left with the wind is blowing out towards left, breezy conditions. The batter smacks a fly ball Double into the left-center outfield gap. Due to the wind conditions and ball hang time, this dynamically changes the ball placement pushing the ball farther away from the right-fielder.
Based on these real-time conditions along with the centerfielder’s gap speed and throwing arm ratings, you choose for him to make the play. He fields it cleanly and accurately hits the shortstop cut-off man who in turn fires home, in an attempt to throw out the runner from 1st base rounding 3rd hoping to score on the play.
It’s going to be a close play at the plate, do you choose to send him home or play it conservative?!
Every ballpark is uniquely mapped into a grid based on its dimensions. From foul lines to far over the outfield walls, your next generation game play action is tracked. All Baseball Classics Ballparks are aligned with rows numbered from 1 to 31 and letters ranging A to EE, thus, creating an alphanumeric cross-section square for ball placement. They are always read with the number first, then the letter.
Position fielders and base runners in the ballpark on a square using color-coded markers based on their matching fielding and base running ratings.
Anytime a fielder is getting to or throwing the ball, you’ll take them in the most direct route possible using any combination of squares vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. Thus, a ball landing in right center will most likely require a path for the fielder to get to by moving him horizontally, vertically, and/or diagonally.
For example, in this diagram, the centerfielder is positioned at V22. The ball is hit to Y17. There are several routes to that ball, though the most efficient is 5 squares. As shown here, the path taken by the centerfielder is: V21, V20, W19, X18, and Y17 for a total of 5 squares.
Whether moving a fielder to or throwing the ball, you’ll decide the best possible path.
BALLPARK ACTION TRACKER
From the first crack of the bat putting a ball in play, everything comes to life on the field with Baseball Classics next generation innovation named the Ballpark Action Tracker (BAT). BAT was designed so you can use the very same initial roll of the six-sided dice (2 blue, 1 green) for a result between the batter or pitcher. This keeps dice rolls to a minimum while maximizing your game play experience!
It begins with a scoreboard to track innings, score, outs, and the wind factor (for outdoor stadiums).
You’ll also find weather elements such as Wind Factor: (M) Mild, (B) Breezy, or (G) Gusty plus Wind Direction: (OL) Out to Leftfield, (IL) In from Leftfield, (OC) Out to Center, (IC) In from Center, (OR) Out to Right, and (IR) In from Right.
Ball Tracker shows where the ball is put into the field of play. It begins with a row listing all possible outcomes from a Baseball Classics batter or pitcher result:
Single, Double, Triple, Home Run, Groundout, Groundout*, Popout, Lineout, Flyout, (Flyout), Double Play, or Triple Play. Icons beneath that show which way the hitter bats followed by alphanumeric codes to crossreference on the ballpark grid based on the sum of that 3 six-sided dice roll. Upper case letters indicate when a ball is in the air while lower case letters mean the ball is hit on the ground. Thus, “21G” is a flyball landing in that location on the field, while “21g” would be a grounder (through the infield) to that spot.
Baseball Hang Time Tracker tracks the hang time of any balls hit into the air. Hang time spans from 2 up to 7 seconds as shown under the dice roll area. This timing impacts the range of squares a fielder moves to an area where the ball is placed based on the alphanumeric location. Naturally, wind factor may impact the flight of a ball. Thus, values under hang time indicate any re-direction from the initial ball location based on wind factor.
Gap Speed Tracker shows fielder range gap coverage (makeup speed) and arm throwing distance for infielders and outfielders. Gap speed ratings are based on the Steal rating of any fielder giving them up to 3 more squares to reach a ball in addition to any hang time. Thus, a groundball (as indicated by a lower case alphanumeric letter) in the infield gives a fielder the range of squares to reach the ball cleanly while a flyball combines the hang time number of squares and, if necessary, adding his gap speed squares to increase his coverage range to reach a ball.
Throwing Arm Distance Tracker is determined by a fielder’s rating. Infielder throwing range is the first number displayed on the scale, then outfield range showing the number of squares he can throw ball to either a base or cut-off man.
With over 2 dozen features, Baseball Classics Ballparks adds authentic, real-time game play for any MLB teams in ballparks they played 1901-Present!
